THE FOUR SEASONS AT PENINSULA PAGAGAYO

Costa Rica is known for its eco-lodges and modest hotels that give visitors an up-close-and-personal experience of the country's natural beauty. Up to now, Costa Rica hasn't been singled out for its five-star resorts. But now, things have changed with the FOUR SEASONS RESORT COSTA RICA AT PENINSULA PAPAGAYO.

The resort introduces a world-class level of luxury and service in an unspoiled setting on a slender Pacific isthmus, fringed by gold-sand beaches. It offers world-class fishing, championship golf on an Arnold Palmer-designed course, a full spa and easy access to the eco-adventures for which the country is famous. The resort's architect, Ronald Zurcher had the resort built with natural materials such as local lava rock, stone, cana brava (similar to bamboo) and wood from Guatemala. The property is 37 miles (about 45 minutes) from Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia, which is a 40-minute flight from San Jose International Airport. For a fee, Four Seasons staff will escort guests from the Liberia airport to the resort.

The resort's 165 rooms and suites have outdoor terraces or balcony living areas and bathrooms with soaking tubs, separate glass-enclosed showers and double vanities. Amenities include CD and DVD players, down pillows, duvets, hair dryer, in-room safe, iron and ironing board. Non-allergenic pillows and terrycloth robes are available, as well as free high-speed Internet access and a complimentary newspaper with breakfast. Suites are nestled into the hillside, with separated living and sleeping areas. The one-bedroom suites feature an infinity plunge pool and a guest powder room with shower. Premier Suites may be converted into two- or three-bedroom suites and feature a separate dining area, as well as an infinity plunge pool. Three-bedroom suites include a dining area that seats six, a full kitchen and a furnished patio. The Presidential Suite features a large living area, dining room and pantry, private central courtyard, outdoor infinity-edge pool and private outdoor shower. The resort also has meeting space measuring 14,595 feet, suitable for small- to medium-sized meetings of up to 450 people. The resort can accommodate conferences and incentive events, as well as weddings, with a full support staff and cutting-edge technology.

Guests have a choice of three dining venues. The Di Mare restaurant offers Italian specialties and ocean views. The restaurant is open for dinner, which can be taken indoors or on the fully-screened outdoor terrace. The casual, all-day Papagayo restaurant serves continental cuisine and local fare either indoors or on the adjoining patio and it offers ocean and pool views. Congo's pool bar-n-grill offers local and American fare in a casual, al fresco setting beneath its shaded, open-air pavilion. Congo's opens on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings for special Churrasqueria and Rodizio theme nights, serving traditional Argentine and Brazilian specialties and presenting live music.

GAMBOA RAINFOREST RESORT
wpeA0.jpg (6040 bytes)

One of the engineering marvels of the world, the Panama Canal is a spectacular place to visit, stretching the width of the country through dense rainforest. Now that the Canal is under Panamanian control, private companies have been allowed to lease this prime land for tourism-related enterprises and the result is a new breed of eco-resort, with truly unique locations. One of the handful of such resorts currently open - already a landmark in just a few years of operation - is the GAMBOA RAINFOREST RESORT. Its location is perfect, soothingly remote and isolated yet just 30 minutes away from Panama City on the Pacific Coast and 30 minute from the Colon Free Zone on the Caribbean. Accommodations consist of 1-7 rooms in a main building and 38 one- and two-bedroom villas. The villas, built in the 1930s and '40s as housing for Panama Canal administrations, have been completely refurbished to capture the ambiance of the original building. Rooms in the hotel building all offer spectacular views of the Cagres River and the surrounding Soberanis National Park, which can be taken in from the cozy hammock on each balcony. Gamboa's world-class spa is currently offering a 2-night Stress Relief Escape package that includes accommodations in a Deluxe Room or villa, an aromatherapy massage, a relaxing tub treatment of choice, a pedicure and manicure, buffet breakfast each morning, airport transfers and more.
