Around the City
Mexico City.JPG (5717 bytes)
Mexico City , the world's largest city - a mixture of  historic & modern influences.

"Mexico" or "D.F." (pronounced "Day-Effay") is how Mexicans often refer to Mexico City Distrio Fedra. In Pre-Columbian days the area was known as Mexico-Tenochtitlan.

Mexico City is the present-day financial, political and cultural center of the country as well as the cradle of Mexican history. Hearkening back to the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, Mexico City is also the Western Hemisphere's oldest urban center. The capital continues to grow by leaps-and-bounds. In the 1930s, it had only one million residents. Today, the capital has a population of 24 million.

Mexico City is a vibrant metropolis blending modernity and ancient heritage. It is common to find immense glass skyscrapers towering above Aztec ruins and charming colonial-era mansions. And, you will find an abundance of leisure options, whether you're on a quest to delve into Mexico's history, sample the city's culinary delights, "shop 'til you drop" or simply experience the myriad delights of a lively, cosmopolitan destination.

Visitors can once again visit Chapultepec Castle, one of Mexico City's cherished landmarks. Chapultepec Castle recently reopened after a two-year, $6 million renovation. Considered the only castle in the Americas, it sits atop a hill overlooking Chapultepec Park. Visitors can tour a number of rooms including the tea salon, bedroom and bathroom of the former royal residents. The castle is also the site of the National Museum of History, displaying more than 55,000 objects chronicling the history of the country. Chapultepec Castle, begun in 1785, atop a 200-foot-high hill, was originally used as a weekend retreat for Spanish viceroys. Upon completion in 1841, it became a military academy and earned infamy as the last stronghold against the U.S. invasion. It later served as the home to Mexican presidents until 1940.
