AIRLINES Los Cabos is accessible by air from most major cities in the U.S. Los Cabos International Airport receives more than 200 flights each week. Airlines that service the airport include: Aeromexico, Aero California, Alaska Airlines, America West, American Airlines, Continental, Delta Air Lines,and Mexicana. Non-stop service is available from Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Denver, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Portland, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston, and Seattle. Los Cabos is approximately a 2.5-hour flight from Phoenix, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Dallas, and Houston. CLIMATE Los Cabos has nearly perfect year-round weather - with more thatn300 sunny days and average temperatures of 82F degrees. In late summer, temperatures can reach into the 90s, but low humidity and ocean breezes keep things comfortable. CURRENCY The peso is the currency used in Mexico and Los Cabos. (Check your local newspaper for the current exchange rate just before leaving on your trip.) U.S. dollars are accepted in many places that cater to tourists. Dollars can be exchanged for pesos at local banks or casas de cambio (exchange houses). ENTRY REQUIREMENTS U.S. citizens need some form of photo identification to enter Mexico, whether a valid passport or an original birth certificate, with photo I.D. A Mexico Tourist Permit is issued free on arrival after proof of citizenship is shown. GETTING AROUND Taxis are readily available anywhere in Los Cabos. The average fare from the airport to Cabo San Lucas is at least $60 one way for a private taxi. (Ask the driver beforehand what the fare is, to avoid surprises.) Vans from the airport that transport up to about 10 people can stop along the way at hotels and drop people off. (It takes longer, but costs about $18 per person - all the way from the airport to Cabo San Lucas.) Buses run between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas for $1.50 per person. Rental cars are also available, and any valid driver's license is accepted. (A rental car is a good idea for regional excursion and/or day-trip travel.) LANGUAGE Spanish is the official language, but most people employed in the tourism industry speak English. LOCATION Los Cabos is the southern-most tip of the Baja peninsula, which is due south of California. Los Cabos is 1,000 miles south of San Diego and is bordered by the Sea of Cortez on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west. 001-800-462-4240 TIME ZONE Los Cabos is on Mountain Standard Time. TIPPING Restaurant tipping is the same as in the U.S.: 15 to 20 percent of the bill. Many hotels impose a 10 to 15 percent daily service charge, which covers non-food and beverage gratuities. If this extra charge is not levied, then porters should be tipped $1 per bag; hotel maids should get 50 cents to $1 each day. WATER Although many people drink straight from the tap, it is still recommended to drink bottled or purified water (aqua purificado). All hotels either purify their water, or serve purified water.
