Kayaking Baja

Choose from 20 itineraries including kayaking adventures in the Sea of Cortes and along the Pacific coast, as well as whale watching in Magdalena Bay and San Ignacio Lagoon. Offered year-round is a six-night kayak exploration of the Sea of Cortes around Espiritu Santo Island. The itinerary starts in La Paz. While kayaking, you may encounter colonies of sea lions; stop at one of the many pristine beaches and head ashore for brisk hikes on breathtaking cliffs; and stay in a different campsite every night. The price of $700 pp/dbl includes some meals, two nights' hotel accommodations, all equipment, and guides.

Biking the Sierra Madre Mountains

Take day trips into the Sierra Madre Mountains, where you bike to isolated villages and old colonial towns high up near the clouds; visit a secluded waterfall and learn about the flora and fauna of the area from an expert guide; and plunge into a pristine river for an invigorating swim. Prices start at $40 per person and include bottled water, guide services, transportation to and from Puerto Vallarta, snacks, lunch, and soft drinks.

Hikers in Copper Canyon

Experience numerous adventures throughout Mexico. A six-night tour through the Sierra de Tarahamara Mountains, in the north, features several opportunities for adventure, including trekking and hiking to the bottom of deep canyons, and visits to mining towns and 19-century missions. Included are a boat ride from Topolobambo Bay to Patos Island, then a train journey through the Copper Canyon. There's also an excursion to Gallego Hill for a scenic view of Urique Canyon. The train continues to Divisadero, in the heart of the Copper Canyon system. Creel is next on the itinerary, followed by a visit to the Cuzarare waterfall and an abandoned Jesuit mission. Also included are visits to Tarahaumara dwellings around the town of San Ignacio and hiking in the Mushroom Valley on the way to Chihuahua City, where clients spend the last night. Rates are $1,035 pp/dbl (minimum of two passengers) and $940 (for groups between four and 10). Included are ground transportation, train tickets, six nights' lodging, some meals, admission fees and guide services.

Inflating your balloon

Enjoy a hot-air balloon tour of the Tenancingo valley, 160 miles west of Mexico City for groups of three to six passengers. Participants are picked up at 6 a.m. for a sunrise flight that takes abut three hours. The flight is followed by brunch and a one-to three-hour mountain-bike tour through nearby woods back to Tenancingo. Priced at $180 per person, the program includes one night's accommodations before the flight, transfers to and from the balloon, a champagne toast, brunch, and the mountain-bike tour.

River Rafting in Veracruz

Choose from several adventure tours in the state of Veracruz. A sample six-night package starts with a night in Veracruz City followed by sea kayaking in the shallows of the Antigua River; a visit to El Tajin, the ancient city of the Totonacas; and rafting down the Filobobos River. You are later transported to Jalcomulco, where you stay at the company's Picocano Adventure Village. All-inclusive packages start at $1,110 pp/dbl, with a minimum of four passengers.
