Molokai Ranch & Lodge - KAUPOA BEACH
Stay in a yurt (a bungalow-like tent) at the ranch's secluded KAUPOA BEACH VILLAGE (rates range from $205 to $225; additional person, $50; children under 15 stay FREE). Situated on the coast, the village overlooks a gorgeous double-crescent white-sand beach. Each of the 40 bungalows includes a private bath and shower and a spacious lanai. Daily maid service, transportation throughout the ranch (no vehicles are allowed in the village) and a hearty ranch-style breakfast are included.

The property includes the upscale MOLOKAI RANCH LODGE (rates $305 to $355; additional person, $50, children 15 and under stay FREE; includes use of pool, fitness center and spa). The two-story lodge is located on eight acres at the entrance of Maunaloa Town. Overlooking wide-open pastures and the sparkling Pacific Ocean, the lodge offers 22 spacious guest rooms, a gourmet restaurant, a bar and a fitness center.

The 54,000-acre ranch is environmentally sensitive. All lights and ceiling fans in the main building operate on solar energy. The ranch has an effective solar water heating system and self-composting toilets.

Hotel Molokai - ON KAMILOLOA BEACH
If you prefer a local-style hotel, stay at Hotel Molokai (rates $80 to $135), located east of Kaunakakai on Kamiloloa Beach. The hotel features a cozy, come-as- you-are beachfront restaurant, a lounge and nightly live Hawaiian entertainment. Some rooms come with kitchenettes.

Kaluakoi Villas - WEST END
On the west end of the island, you'll find the Kaluakoi Villas' spacious units with kitchenettes (rates $135 to $210).

Camping - (4 CAMPGROUNDS)
The island's four campgrounds are the least expensive way to go. PALAAU STATE PARK is located near the center of the island at 1,6000-feet elevation, 8 miles from Kaunakakai. Amenities include restrooms, picnic tables and grills. (You must bring your own water.) Camping fee is $5.

Maui County maintains two beach campgrounds on Molokai - ALII COUNTY BEACH, which is 3.3 miles east of Kaunakakai, and PAPOHAKU, which is 23 miles west of Kaunakakai. Each has restrooms, picnic tables, grills and drinking water. Fee is $3 per adult, $.50 for children under 18.

Wilderness camping is allowed in the Molokai Forest Reserve by permit from the Division of Forestry. The campground is located at Waikolu Lookout, which is about 13 miles from Kaunakakai. (No amenities are available; camping is FREE.)
