& Baldwin Sugar Museum Maui Must-Dos SEE THE SUNRISE from the top of Haleakala. Drive to the top, and dress warmly; the coldest temperature ever recorded in Hawaii, 11 degrees F, happened here at 8,000 feet in 1961. See the rare ahinahina, or silversword, which takes 20 years to bloom. WALK THROUGH THE OCEAN at the Maui Ocean Center. A clear tunnel traverses a 600,000-gallon aquarium. Go eyeball to eyeball with sharks and rays. CATCH A SHOW at the $27 million Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahalui. Local hula groups and international companies such as the Moscow Ballet have taken bows on this great stage. INSIDER'S HOT TIP - The trail to Red Sand Beach, Hana, is slippery with volcanic shale and edges a splashy lava shoreline, but it's only a ten-minute trek. And it's well worth the effort. Go in the early morning and you will have this magnificent cove, with its garnet-colored sands and teal water, all to yourself. |
