"Big Island" Must-Dos

Volcanoes, orchids, billfish fishing, and more!

"The Big Island" Hawaii - an exciting land of spectacular contrasts - takes you from the fiery craters of the world's most active volcanoes, to the sunniest coastlines found throughout the islands, to breathtaking snow-capped peaks. Twice the size of all the other Hawaiian islands combined, the fascinating terrain of Hawaii boasts oceanside fields of black lava, grassy foothills, black sand beaches and stunning 13,000-foot peaks. Just a short drive can take you from virtual desert, through a rain forest and on to the snow-capped heights of MAUNA KEA. The quaint and historic village of Kailua-Kona abounds with shops, dining and ocean activities. Thirty minutes north of Kona is the Kohala Sun Coast, a beautiful area of private resorts with the only natural white sand beaches on the island. On the eastern coast is Hilo, the "City of Rainbows", a quiet area surrounded by sloping mountains and gentle ocean. Each city invites you to explore its own unique charm, beautiful sights and exciting adventures just waiting to happen.

BIG ISLAND WEATHER: Temperatures year-round on the Big Island are generally warm and humid. Unlike other Hawaiian islands, it rains more in the summer when tradewinds are forced upward as they encounter the massive peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

HIKE ACROSS the floor of a volcanic crater and have lunch at the lip of doom in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

SWIM WITH THE DOLPHINS at Hilton Waikoloa Village, or just or back and watch their aquatic gymnastics.

LOOK FOR THE GREEN FLASH - a bit of emerald light sometimes spotted at the last second of a sunset. For a prime viewing spot, sink into the hammock on the oceanfront lawn of Mauna Lani Point condominiums

INSIDER'S HOT TIP - Sip a great cup of Kona Coffee, brewed from the gourmet bean grown on the Big Isle, a Holuakoa Cafe, on Highway 180 near the Holualoa post office, right in coffee country. With your latte or espresso, sample homemade pastries, bagels and quiche.
