The Hawaii Tourism Authority and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau have created a program to heighten awareness of Hawaii's arts and cultural offerings called the "Hawaii Arts Season."

While traditional Hawaiian arts and culture play a key role in the season, the festival also includes events celebrating other parts of the Pacific, including the Polynesian Cultural Center's annual fireknife competition, as well as a one-time exhibit of traditional artifacts gathered throughout the Pacific more than 230 years ago, as Western contact was just beginning.

Events under the Arts Season umbrella include symphony, ballet and opera performances, as well as presentations of hula and Hawaiian music. Ongoing events include museum and gallery exhibits, regularly scheduled activities offered by hotels and "art nights" in such venues as Honolulu; Hanapepe, Kauai and Lahaina, Maui. The Kauai Museum is among the venues that features a regular menu of classes and activities.

The Aloha Festivals, today an autumn tradition spanning the better part of September and October, was created to help encourage visitors interested in Hawaii's culture to visit. This celebration, which many remember as Aloha Week, outgrew it's seven-day limit as it expanded to encompass hundreds of events from concerts and block parties to hula performances and floral parades. This expansion hints at the hunger for traditional and modern cultural events and experiences among both residents and visitors.

With its excellent weather year-round and its heritage of fitness and athleticism - think surfing, paddling and gamefishing, for starters - Hawaii is home to a bevy of athletic pursuits.

You may be able to catch a big-wave surfing competition, a rodeo, a gamefishing contest or a professional football game or golf tournament. There also are a number of marathons and other participatory events.
