At more than 5,000 feet above sea level, the course is green and, often, damp. BACK TO 'GOLF ON THE BIG ISLAND' The MAKELEI HAWAII COUNTRY CLUB sits on the mountain above the Kohala coast and runs a mammoth 7,091 yards. HARBOUR & VOLCANO GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB The most unusual golf experiences on the island can be found at DISCOVERY HARBOUR, the southernmost course in the United States and a short road trip away at the VOLCANO GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB, which, as the name suggests, sits on an active volcano. Players can take on both public layouts on consecutive days. For quality, however, it's hard to beat. All but two of Kauai's nine courses are notable, but we're focusing on seven: Prince Course

Course Actually consists of three less stunning but still challenging nine-hole lineups - the WOODS, the OCEAN and the LAKES. Like the Prince Course, all three were designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Golfers left in shock by their high scores swear the 252-room Princeville Hotel, the centerpiece of the resort, helps soothe their misery. A 6,637-yard course that hovers above the Pacific along the bluffs, is one of Nicklaus' masterpieces. The local rain forests are expertly worked into the design, making it a favorite for televised tourneys; each hole is named after an animal. Mokihana An easier links-style 6,545-yard course. Resort Golf Course Ranks with Kiele and the Prince Course as Kauai's top layouts. It's a true challenge, even for the pros. Trade winds taunt players early in the back nine, and several of the holes run uphill or downhill. BACK TO 'GOLF ON THE ISLAND OF KAUAI' (A Public Course) - offers one of the great Hawaiian bargains. Nonresidents can play the 6,585-yard municipal course, a layout that has hosted the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship several times, for as little as $20 a round. However, according to the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau, only 1% of U.S. visitors to Oahu play golf. Why? About half the courses are private, and many others are owned by the military. The available courses aren't up to the standards set by the world-class resorts on the other islands. Locals know, though, where a few gems can be had. After it opened in 1992, it was soon tabbed by many as the toughest course in the world. Dick Nugent and J. Tuthill designed the 7,310-yard course with sloping fairways and loads of sand traps. A 6,279-yard course affiliated with the Turtle Bay Hilton and Country Club. The virtually tree-free front nine resembles a links course, but, after the turn-around, the obstacles are back, as are water hazards and the sight of Oahu's northernmost point. Turtle Bay's remote location works for golfers who want to escape the bustle of Honolulu. GOLF PACKAGES Kauai's POIPU BAY GOLF COURSE, home to the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, is offering a variety of 2006 values designed for golfers who want to experience the award-winning course. Poipu Bay's 2006 "Grand Slam Package" offers three rounds of golf for a discounted price. The package includes green fees, shared golf cart, use of the GPS (global positioning system) and driving range and three rounds at Poipu Bay for $360 plus tax. For guests staying at the adjacent Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa, the package is offered at $300 plus tax. The package price represents a substantial savings off the single-round green fee at Poipu Bay, which is $125 for Grand Hyatt Guests and $185 for non-Hyatt guests. The package is available through Dec. 19, 2006. The course also offers two "Prepaid Golf Packages" for 2006, providing discounts to individuals who pre-purchase five or 10 rounds of golf. The five-round package price is %550, representing a savings of $375 over the standard per-round green fee of $185. The 10-rounds package price is $1,000, a savings of $850 over the standard per-round green fee. Additional savings are offered to guests who are staying at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa. Each golfer's Prepaid Golf card will be kept on file at the Poipu Bay Golf Shop for easy access and check-in for their rounds.
