Visiting London with kids? Apartment is way to go...

Great Britain, despite its many attractions, is not known for its spacious hotel rooms, so when traveling with children, room size and other family-friendly amenities could make or break a vacation, so we've scoped out a couple of good-sized accommodations. Contact our Britain Family Specialist for more information and to make reservations for you and your family and for other families that may be traveling with you on your winter or summer "breaks"!

Entrance to the Athenaeum, on Piccadilly

The five-star ATHENAEUM HOTEL & APARTMENTS, a Small Luxury Hotel of the World property, is one such find, offering accommodations that are roomy (particularly the apartments) and toney, yet comfortable. This is not a hotel where children are given the cold eye at reception and the management has gone so far as to create a family apartment, complete with a games console coffee table with classic video games and a colorful decor. The apartment also features a trundle bed in the alcove, suitable for children under age 10; and a selection of blocks and puzzles and blackboards on which kids can create their own art.

In all, there are 34 one- and two-bedroom apartments - including the family apartment, a traditional luxurious apartment and a modern, high-tech apartment - located in Edwardian townhouses adjacent to the main building. All apartments offer a kitchen, a comfortable sitting room and plasma-screen television with Web-based games, broadband Internet access and CD and DVD 0layers, a washer and dryer, a sofa bed and a security video entry phone. The property also features 111 hotel guest rooms and 12 suites in the main building.

Families who don't want to cook can dine at a number of eateries at the hotel, including Bullochs Restaurant, serving Mediterranean cuisine; the Windsor Lounge, a casual club with a children's menu; or via 24-hour room service. Or you can take advantage of the property's location in Piccadilly to sample the restaurants and sightsee at Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park. A one-bedroom apartment is priced from approximately $560 per night on weekends.

THE GROVE

Chandler’s Cross, Hertfordshire

THE GROVE, thee Athenaeum's sister property, is an 18th century country manor located  18 miles from central London on 300 acres in private Hertfordshire parkland. The former home of the Earle of Clarendon, the property opened September 2003 and features 227 spacious rooms and suites with kid-pleasing plasma televisions, a DVD library and boxes of age-specific toys on loan for the duration of the stay. Some rooms are equipped with such extra touches as working fireplaces and balconies and the decor throughout is a startling mix of antique and modern design elements.

New at The Grove is the Anouska's Kids' Club, which debuted fall 2004, featuring a dedicated swimming pool, a playground, sand pit, tree house and even a resident donkey. Open to children ages 3 months to 10 years, the Kids' Club offers supervised activities from swimming and cycling to baking and crafts while parents take advantage of the Kyle Phillips-designed, 18-hole golf course or visit the Sequoia Spa. Older children and adults can play tennis on grass courts or swim in the pool within the property's walled garden, which can also accommodate up to 1,000 people for events.

Kids age 13 and older can also swim at the Sequoia Spa indoor pool during designated family hours. Two of the hotel's restaurants, the Stable and the Glasshouse offer kids' menus. Children ages 7 to 13 also can order from the adult menu for a 50% discount. The third restaurant, Colette's, offers adults a la carte, gourmet dining. The Grove offers weekend rates in a super category room overlooking the walled garden for approximately $395; $490 for a superb room overlooking the golf course. Includes breakfast in the Glasshouse restaurant.
