'Well Dressing'
wpeA.jpg (7972 bytes)
'Well dressing 'in Derby Market Place - marked  The Mayor and the Bishop of Derby
The theme of the city's decoration in 1997 was Wright of Derby's painting "A Philosopher Lecturing on the Orrery"
Formed part of Derby's celebration of the bi-centenary of the artist.

Almost unique to Derbyshire (with roots in Pagan times). ('Well flowering' or  well decorating almost died out when forbidden by the early Christians. The custom was revived and many springs were purified and rededicated to the Virgin Mary or one of the saints). Some villagers still dress their wells - and invite you to come and watch.
