IN STRATFORD SHAKESPEARE'S
COMPLETE WORKS TO TAKE OVER STRATFORD Thousand of extra visitors are expected in the UK to see the ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY stage the biggest festival in its history. The RSC will host The Complete Works, a year-long celebration of the entire Shakespeare canon at its STRATFORD-UPON-AVON home. Theatre companies from across the world including the US and around the UK will be invited to take part. The US contribution will include the CHICAGO SHAKESPEARE THEATER in its first visit to the UK presenting Barbara Gaines' production of the Henry IV plays. MICHAEL KAHN'S WASHINGTON SHAKESPEARE will present Love's Labours Lost and NEW YORK'S THEATER FOR A NEW AUDIENCE is bringing The Merchant of Venice with F. Murray Abraham as Shylock. Fifteen of the productions in the festival will be staged by the RSC and will include the start of a new cycle of Shakespeare's history plays. Audiences will also see the return of Patrick Stewart in The Tempest and in Antony and Cleopatra with Harriet Walter. Other highlights include Merry Wives, a new musical adaptation of The Merry Wives of Windsor starring Dame Judi Dench and to close the festival, the return of Sir Ian McKellen as King Lear, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn. As well as performing in existing RSC theatres, The Complete Works will use venues around Stratford including a new outdoor theatre, THE DELL, by the river. HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, where Shakespeare is buried, provides another setting, while SHAKESPEARE'S BIRTHPLACE will host a series of debates. The homeless people's theatre company CARDBOARD CITIZENS will stage Timon of Athens in a local hotel. The most significant new building to launch during the festival will be the 1,000-seat COURTYARD THEATRE which opens next July. The temporary building allows for increased audience capacity in Stratford during the festival of up to 2,800 theatregoers a night. The Courtyard will continue as the RSC's main auditorium when work starts in 2007 on the transformation of the ROYAL SHAKESPEARE THEATRE. Thornton recently played Enjolras in Les Miserables at the Queen's Theatre and was in the ensemble of Chicago; he is also in the new Cole Porter film De-Lovely. Burrell comes direct to Phantom from appearing in Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Shaffesbury Theatre. Her other theatre credits include Disney's Beauty and the Beast and several plays at the open-air theatre in London's Regent's Park. Phantom celebrated its 18th birthday in London on October 9, 2004. It opened at Her Majesty's in 1986 with Michael Crawford in the lead role, Sarah Brightman as Christine and Steve Barton as Raoul. |
