With their trademark Bermuda grass fairways and pink-sand traps, this island's courses have always offered visiting golfers a challenging, yet scenic sporting experience. Now some aspects of the game are changing. In the past, stateside golfers here quickly learned they had to make adjustments to account for the differing, sometimes plodding, ground conditions. But with the recent introduction of TifEagle, a hybrid Bermuda grass expected to provide a faster and truer, putting surface, golfers playing this island's privately owned courses will find putting greens to be similar to those back home. Both the TUCKER'S POINT development (the former Castle Harbour Golf Club, which will reopen its links this Spring) and the MID OCEAN GOLF CLUB have switched to the new turf! True to form, Mid Oceans 6,512 yards heighten the long game with six par 4s exceeding 400 yards. (Theres even a 238 yard par-3.) Nonetheless, a card full of double and triple bogeys pales in comparison to the superb views of the mighty Atlantic. But win or lose, the lasting thrill is to say, I played Mid Ocean. Located in the verdant center of the Island in Devonshire Parish, OCEAN VIEW is owned and maintained by the Government of Bermuda. On this fully matured, 9-hole course, one enjoys splendid vistas of the Atlantic from several of the elevated tees. At 2,940 yards, it may seem tame enough, but guess again. Its unpredictable terrain and rambling hills remain, as you will soon discover, doggedly resistant to low scoring. Situated in some of Bermudas most lush and beautiful oceanside terrain, PORT ROYAL is a popular and challenging golf course. No matter where you look (or lie), the genius of Robert Trent Jones is evident. From freeform greens set against the sapphire sea, to gracefully winding fairways, skirting the coral cliffs. Watch out for well-trapped greens and bunkered fairways. Theyll demand your full concentration! RIDDELS BAY, the elder statesman of Bermuda country clubs, has enticed golfers the world over since 1922. And no wonder. Winding along a peninsula measuring only 600 yards at its widest, these lovely links provide a magnificent challenge to ones golf game and camera. The course measures a relatively short 5,713 yards. But with its tight fairways and small, narrow greens, accuracy is the name of the game. Additional pleasure, or perhaps vexation, depending on your performance, is gained by the proximity of some holes to the ocean ST. GEORGE'S GOLF COURSE, the newest of Bermudas Government golf courses, was designed by Robert Trent Jones and is a par 62, 4,043-yard course. Located at the eastern tip of the Island within walking distance of the old Town of St. George, the links range along hillsides with imposing views of the Atlantic. Wind velocity will be an important factor in your game. On a couple of the par-3s, for instance, depending on the day, you may need anything from a nine-iron to a driver to reach the green. To conquer this one, youll need concentration, proper club selection and finally, very careful shot execution. |
