Plan a Special Visit to Nonsuch Island

Bermuda has opened Nonsuch Island! A new, half-day tour, operating on Thursday morning and restricted to 25 participants per week, lets visitors explore Bermuda's most treasured wildlife reserve, Nonsuch Island, which has never before been accessible to the public. The unique habitat on Nonsuch is representative of the prehistoric, native environment of Bermuda and visitors get a guided island tour conducted by conservationist Dr. David Wingate of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research. The 4-hour tour costs $75 and includes lunch. Proceeds go to support BBSR's local environmental research and education programs.

BERMUDA AQUARIUM, MUSEUM AND ZOO (BAMZ)

This facility puts the spotlight on the marine and land life of Bermuda, Australia, Madagascar and the Caribbean. Newlyweds can visit North Rock, a 145,000-gallon coral reef exhibit. Sharks, barracuda and more than 200 species of fish are on display, as are alligators, Galapagos tortoises and Caribbean flamingos. A hike along the Coastal Walkway affords beautiful views of Harrington Sound. During the Animal Feeding Tour, held daily at 1 p.m., from April through September (weekends only from October through March), guests can spend time with BAMZ caretakers as they feed such creatures as seals and wallabies. BAMZ also offers the 'Curator's Tour' every Friday from 8:45 to 11 a.m. This tour provides a behind-the-scenes look at the facility. The cost of $25 includes breakfast. Regular admission to BAMZ is $10 per person. The facility is open daily, except Christmas, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visitors looking to inject some science into their getaway should stop at this center. At 10 a.m. on Wednesdays, you can tour the laboratories, grounds and research vessels. The station also features a 20,000-volume library. Admission is free, though donations are welcomed.

Production artists demonstrate the art of glass making.

Newlyweds can buy a glass honeymoon souvenir here after they've watched it being made. The studio is open from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. between April and October, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November to March.

BERMUDA PERFUMERY & GARDENS

Demonstrating perfumes and perfume-making

This site is more than an attraction; as its name suggests, - it is a spot where perfumes (as well as lotions and soaps) are created and sold. A free tour lets you marvel at the beautiful flowers and see how they are turned into perfumes. You can also hike the Nature Trail, which winds its way to the Orchid House. Many of the plants and flowers along the path are labeled, adding an educational element to the romantic stroll. Also worth exploring are the Tea Garden and Ornamental Garden. Between April 1 and Oct. 31, the facility is open from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Between Nov. 1 and March 31, it is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

BOTANICAL GARDENS

Bermuda Rose

Opened in 1958, this 36-acre venue houses more than 1,000 varieties of plants. Permanent collections include an exotic-orchid house, the Hibiscus Garden, a subtropical fruit garden, palm garden, plumeria collection and cacti and conifer plantations. We recommend a stop in the sensory garden, which was designed for the blind. Here you can breathe in the scents of geranium, lemon, lavender and spice. Admission to the Botanical Gardens is free; tours that last approximately 90 minutes are available.

CRYSTAL CAVES
Bermuda has the highest concentration of limestone caves in the world.

Discovered in 1907, this network of caves and lakes rests 120 feet underground and is filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

DEVIL'S HOLE AQUARIUM

Visit the historic aquarium, tour the sound and Tucker's Town, pictured above.

This facility offers another venue for visitors to see marine life on display. The aquarium's collection includes giant grouper and turtles, as well as sharks. Guests can even feed the turtles and fish - bags of food are priced at $5 for two, and $3 for one. The admission cost is $10, but for an additional $25, visitors can take a horse- and-buggy tour around the sound and into Tucker's Town.

Up close and personal

The Southampton Princess Hotel is home to this three-acre cove, where travelers can spend time frolicking in the water with bottlenose dolphins. Dolphin Quest is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. year-round. A half-hour experience costs $95 for guests 13 and up.

ROYAL NAVAL DOCKYARD

The former headquarters of England's Royal Navy is now home to the Bermuda Maritime Museum. Clocktower Centre, arts-and-crafts shops, watersports facilities and a cruise ship terminal. The Bermuda Maritime Museum, housed in Bermuda's largest fort, features naval artifacts and gold treasures recovered from Spanish shipwrecks. On display in the Queen's Exhibition Hall are exhibits on navigation, whaling and different types of ships. Visitors tired from a day of sightseeing and browsing in museums, shops and galleries can nourish themselves in one of the dockyard's restaurants. Walking tours can be arranged.

Historic Verdmont

This historic home and museum, dating back to the 1700s, bursts with antiques. Visitors can check out furniture, silver, English and Chinese porcelains - and even a child's nursery, complete with toys. If you do not wish to explore independently, excursions can be arranged  with Bermuda Lectures & Tours. This company offers informative and enjoyable outings that focus on the island's architecture, history and ecology. Tours last approximately 90 minutes and cost $15 per person.
